Home improvement

Having had a recent spell of luck with fixing up me and my friends' cars and doing some routine maintenance, I was feeling pretty handy and thought I'd take a crack at fixing the leaking tap at home.

Long story short, through the course of the day I discovered:

1. Taps, even cheap ones, cost quite a bit ($36)
2. There isn't a common standard in pipes, just hundreds of adaptors and step-downs
3. Just because you have a part on your plumbing doesn't make it a commonly available part
4. The location of 3 different Bunnings Warehouses in Brisbane
5. There is no Ctrl-Z to undo it if you stuff up and break something

The net result is that the leaking tap is no longer leaking - it has become an inoperative tap. We have had to stop up part of the water supply till we manage to find properly fitting components, and that will have to wait till tomorrow morning.

Calling in a plumber is beginning to look like an attractive option.

It never rains but it pours

I'm not really big phone user, not while I'm here, since most of my contacts are made online. Basically the phone is just something which I use when I'm not at my computer.

So there I was making my once-a-week call to mom, when I get called to the door twice - once to receive a package, once to answer the telephone repairman for the other phone line in the house, when my mobile phone rings - twice. One's the housemate, and the other's my mechanic whom I have been trying to reach for the past week. I'm trying to speak to the phone repairman, while mom is still on the line, wondering what was going on here, reminding me to keep an eye on him while he is in Mark's room just in case something goes missing.

For a guy who doesn't get that many visitors or phone calls in a day, that many things happening at once, is a little, um, overwhelming.
